The Value of Working at a School

By Andreas Fanos on September 17, 2018

A job is a job. It’s a lot of hard work, especially when someone is in college too. In my opinion, no one has the right to criticize or disrespect someone for what they do for a living because just about every job has its advantages, but also its disadvantages. No one should be angry or feel bad about what occupation they do for a living while in school or being done with college whether it’s working at a restaurant, in retail, business, or school.

The way the economy is nowadays, everything is just so expensive and the overall price of living has gone up. Student loans have also caused students to delay their lives to pay it off and stay at home to save up money and pay other bills. I have friends and everyone else surely does too in different industries, however, no one really sees the value in working at a school, whether its a high school, middle school, college, or pre-K.

Education really is the light of the world, in my opinion, I was raised that way and that’s what I truly believe because many without an education don’t go far in life. That is not to say that no one does but the individual has to have a special gift or work very hard at something else. Although, we shouldn’t be putting down an education because it only makes people smarter and as they say “knowledge is power.”

I was taught to be educated, even though I don’t come from an educated family as most of them didn’t even do some college and with none obtaining a degree. I went to college to pursue my dreams and get a good job, which I did, and without having a degree I would have been so lost. Paying bills is all a part of being an adult and even though the student loans can cause anxiety, it was worth it I would say.

As was stated earlier before, people don’t see how good it is to work for a school as an individual is making a direct impact on young people’s lives. College students can work as a substitute teacher in any major they are studying to get some experience on a resume and it’s even a plus for people who are going for teaching to get some worthwhile experience.

Teaching surely isn’t for everyone but the work is truly rewarding, making an impact on young people’s lives. Teaching them and supporting them to be the best they can be. The hours can be pretty enjoyable and feel like a 9 to 5, but what people have to understand is that it’s not for everyone.

These are just some of the reasons why working at a school is great, but what makes it so terrific is the professionalism.  Walking in with a dress shirt and pants really has the office feel like instances sitting at a desk and collecting homework/assignments. Being a substitute teacher has really made a positive impact on my life and exceeded my expectations of working at a school.

It has to be said that being a substitute teacher is just scratching the surface of what a real teacher does. It seems in today’s society that teachers are being undervalued and not given the money they deserve for the work they put in because they do a lot such as meeting up with parents, grading, teaching, sending emails, making lesson plans, having to buy school supplies if not given a grant and more.

A good teacher also motivates or inspires others to be better and to make something of their lives and live it to the fullest. People look up to them.

As stated above, teachers make a significant impact on young people’s lives and above. Some students will even come back and thank you for it as everyone has a favorite teacher or professor that they liked more than the others and who helped them out a lot in their life. Another great thing about it is having the weekends off.

Working at a school is very much doing something excellent for the community in educating young or adult minds. School is a bare necessity and it doesn’t hurt to be educated. It’s obviously important to be able to read, write, and communicate effectively. College can be fun and games at times but what it really is about is getting a great education and acquiring a good job after the four years or more. It is about the future and learning what an individual wants to be.

The truth is that getting an education opens doors and although some may be locked, others are open. People have to be diligent enough and look with their eyes to see the other open doors or opportunities out there. Before judging someone for being a teacher or working for a school, think about these ideas before saying anything.
